Why Prestage cannot build a slaughterhouse in Iowa

Prestage is a privately held, out-of-state corporation, and the nation’s 5th largest pork producer. They want to build a salughterhouse that would kill 10,000 hogs a day. This plant would come at the expense of taxpayers, local family farmers, and our quality of life.

  • Processing plants mean more factory farms in Iowa. With over 20 million corporate hogs in Iowa, we don’t need another packing plant or more factory farms. We need a moratorium.

  • No taxpayer money for out of state corporations. We’ve heard two Iowa communities have already said no to Prestage because they didn’t want to pay the millions in incentives Prestage is demanding.

  • Prestage wants the profits, but we’ll get the pollution. Factory farms pollute our air and water. With over 725 impaired waterways (including the already impaired Winnebago) this packing plant and the factory farms it will bring to North Central Iowa mean more Air & Water Pollution.

  • This is not a boon for Mason City – it will be a boondoggle. While taxpayers pay for road upgrades to accommodate hundreds of semis every day, sewer upgrades to accommodate housing the 10,000 hogs slaughtered every day, and other infrastructure needs; we’ll see our property values across town go down, not up.
