Bakken: a victory and disturbing news
The Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) met yesterday to discuss their proposed next steps on the Bakken Pipeline and draft an order to address issues raised by thousands of Iowans. Here are the main takeaways from the IUB meeting:
Victory! We believe Dakota Access will have to disclose their $25 million insurance policy and the corporations financially invested in the pipeline. They asked for confidential treatment but the IUB will likely side with us and agree that the public is served by seeing this information.
Witnesses have said Dakota Access has started construction, meaning clearing brush and trees or placing stakes. They cannot start construction yet because they don't have a permit.
The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska filed a motion to consult with the IUB on the permit. The IUB tentatively denied this motion, even though the path of the pipeline will cut through the tribe's ancestral lands.
The IUB is listening to some of our demands. Dakota Access wanted to fast track the building process and the IUB ruled no last week. And, Dakota Access' insurance policies will most likely be made public. Your hard work is paying off! But, this fight is still far from over.
