Windsor Heights approves 24/7 clean energy resolution
"Iowa CCI applauds passage of this resolution which spurs action that lowers energy costs for everyday people. It also sends a message to MidAmerican Energy to retire their costly coal fleet and avert climate catastrophe."
WINDSOR HEIGHTS, IA – Iowa CCI applauds Windsor Heights Mayor Jones and City Council for unanimously approving a 24/7 clean electricity resolution tonight.
"A 24/7 carbon-free electricity resolution spurs investments into energy efficiency for homes, businesses, and public buildings. As well as community solar and energy back up systems. This action lowers costs for working families, makes our communities more resilient, and reduces carbon emissions that are causing the climate crisis." - Jake Grobe, CCI Climate Justice Organizer.
This makes Windsor Heights the third city to pass such a resolution, joining Waterloo and Des Moines. After Iowa CCI members and allies pushed the Capitol City to pass the first in 2021, it was considered the most ambitious city-wide climate goal in the country.
Iowa cities passing these resolutions also signal to MidAmerican Energy that they need to retire their coal fleet and replace it with wind, solar, and energy storage. MidAmerican is Iowa's single biggest carbon polluter because of the five coal plants they own and operate. Despite protest from community members, the investor-owned utility corporation has stated they plan to burn coal until 2050.
