The Prestage fight isn't over

We had a historic victory early this month: People Power stopped the Prestage slaughterhouse in Mason City! This is a HUGE win – not just for Mason City and surrounding communities, but for all of Iowa.  This slaughterhouse would have killed 22,000 hogs per day, meaning more factory farms in Iowa at the expense of our water and air, quality of life, and taxpayer dollars. Through grassroots organizing, the project was voted down. But our work isn’t over. We’ve heard that Governor Branstad is pressuring Bill Schickel to change his vote. Bill Schickel, Alex Kuhn, and John Lee –  the three city councilors that voted “no” on the project – could still reintroduce Prestage’s proposal for reconsideration. This is why we can’t let our guard down. We must remind these three city councilors why the people of Mason City don’t want this slaughterhouse, and we must encourage them to stay strong in the face of corporate power.
