Great turnout at CCI Deferred Action meeting

The DREAM is still alive

Closing out the summer, our Latino Organizing Project leaders hosted a powerful informational workshop in Marshalltown with over 70 of our members and allies in attendance!

The session, led by attorney Brynne Howard from Justice for Our Neighbors, served to inform people about the deferred action process. People received information on how to qualify, a list of documents needed, as well as a list of local resources.

Deferred Action is a type of “administrative relief” issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that prevents eligible DREAM Act youth from being deported. Our members are interested in seeing how deferred action could help rejuvenate the DREAM Act which would serve as a more permanent solution for immigrant youth fearing deportation.

Deferred Action is not a permanent solution. It’s a step in the right direction but we want to push for comprehensive immigration reform that would stop the government from deporting our hard-working youth and breaking up families once and for all.

At the end of the meeting, CCI member Maria Alvarez got a team of members and volunteers interested in organizing a deferred action legal clinic in Marshalltown. The clinic would help eligible immigrants get started on their applications and engage immigrants in the bigger fight towards winning changes in the immigration system. Many people were excited about the idea of organizing their own legal clinic in Marshalltown.

Over the next few months, we plan to work on hosting a legal clinic in Marshalltown and possibly one in Des Moines. “Don’t be afraid. This is a good opportunity to stand up and recognize that we also have rights,” said Saeth Silva, a member of CCI and a DREAM Act eligible youth Stay tuned to hear more about our work around immigration reform!
