Amerigroup Iowa for Care Over Cost Day of Action

Amerigroup is Part of Elevance Health Profiteering Empire Whose Business Model Relies on Denying Members Care

[Des Moines, IA]– Members of Iowa CCI today participated in the Care Over Cost Day of Action and rallied at Amerigroup to demand the corporation stop denying care to its members and put people over profit. Amerigroup is part of the Elevance Health, formerly Anthem BlueCross BlueShield, profiteering empire whose business model relies on denying members care. Last year, Elevance reported $8.5 billion in profits. The action comes a day before Elevance Health’s Shareholder Meeting.

Iowa CCI board member and Type-1 diabetic from Dubuque, Bri Moss said, “Amerigroup refused to cover my most up-to-date treatment in order to save money at the expense of my well-being and quality of life."

CCI member Erica Sawyer of Des Moines added, “Health insurance corporations like Amerigroup and Elevance Health care more about paying their shareholders than actually doing their job and covering our care. And it truly shows when they deny countless claims for care."

At the rally, a dozen Iowa CCI leaders, health care advocates, and community members shared stories of denials and delays of care and left a letter to be delivered to Elevance Health CEO Gail Boudreaux. Pictures and video of the action may be found here.

Iowa CCI is a member of People’s Action Care Over Cost campaign that organizes people across the country to appeal and overturn insurance claim denials from private health insurers and to get people the care they need. Last November, Elevance Health refused to acknowledge the 70 Elevance members who visited their national headquarters.
