Demand a special election!

As you probably know, Connie Boesen was elected to become the next Mayor of Des Moines on November 7. This means her current at-large seat with two years left in the term will be open beginning January 8.

Following the election, some people were saying there would be a special election in March to determine who fills Connie's vacancy. That decision has not been made yet. We’ve heard from three City Councilors so far that they haven’t decided what to do.

The Des Moines City Council can either call for a special election or appoint someone to fill Boesen’s seat – without public input. At CCI, we believe the City Council should let democracy do its job and let voters decide by holding a special election.

We need you to help send that message! Here's what you can do:

  1. Collect signatures on a petition for a special election. With enough signatures, we can force the City Council to hold a special election. Keep an eye on your mailbox next week with a letter and petition from us, or reply to this email if you'd like to swing by our office and pick one up!

  2. Share our posts on social media – and let folks know you’re a Democracy Defender! You can find us at https://www.facebook.com/iowacci or https://twitter.com/iowacci.

It’s up to us to defend our democracy and make sure voters decide who will represent us!
