Factory farm operators Luke and Charlie Kollasch sued for violating environmental standards
Iowa CCI members applaud Attorney General Tom Miller for cracking down on violators
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2010, DES MOINES, IOWA --- Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller has filed a lawsuit against hog factory operators Kollasch Land and Livestock and General Development, LLC, owned by Luke and Charlie Kollasch, for repeatedly failing to file yearly manure management plans for their eight hog factories. Attorney General Miller is seeking $5,000 a day in civil penalties. For years, members of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement have challenged the Kollasches' attempts to build large-scale hog factories and exposed potential pollution problems from their existing factory farms.
"Members of Iowa CCI applaud the Attorney General's decision to sue the Kollasches," said Iowa CCI Board President Vern Tigges. "Factory farm operators must comply with environmental standards, and if they don't, state officials must crack down and take tough action. Violators should be fined to the fullest extent possible."
Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement is a group of everyday people who talk, act and get things done on issues that matter most. With thousands of members from all walks of life -- urban and rural, black and white, immigrants and lifelong Iowans -- CCI has been tackling tough issues and getting things done for 35 years.
