Iowa CCI headquarters – The Master Matrix is a scoring system included in factory farm applications. It’s supposed to give communities a greater voice in the siting of factory farms and more protections from the pollution they create — but that hasn’t happened.
The Master Matrix has amounted to little more than a rubber stamp: applicants only need 50% — an “F” by most standards — to pass, and DNR records show that only 2% of applications have been denied. With factory farms skyrocketing across Iowa and our water quality getting worse, it’s clear that the Master Matrix has failed.
We know the Master Matrix is no substitute for local control, but it’s the only tool we have right now. The Master Matrix shouldn’t only work for the factory farm industry — it should work for us.
Last month Iowa CCI and Food & Water Watch went on the offense and filed a formal rulemaking petition to strengthen the Master Matrix! Join us to make the the EPC knows that we want them to strengthen the rules for factory farms!
